Apple Crisp

I LOVE Apple Pie, but have never successfully made one... that being said, every now and again I get a craving for an apple pie and since I generally do not buy baked goods, I opted to make Apple Crisp, almost the same but without the crust (which is what I have most trouble with) I know, I know it is not the same but for me it's close enough and I promise that one of these days I will MASTER THE ART OF PIE MAKING, but for now here is the Apple Crisp

Filling:

7 granny smith apples
1tsp of cinnamon
3/4 cup of sugar
zest and juice from 1 lemon

Peel, core and slice the apples. Combine: apples, cinnamon, sugar and lemon in a bowl and mix together.

Topping:

2 sticks of butter (cold)
1 1/2 cup of flour
1 cup of oatmeal
3/4 cup of brown sugar
1/4 cup of granulated sugar

Combine flour, sugars and oatmeal in a bowl add chilled butter cut in small pieces and work it into the flour mixture with pastry blender until butter is evenly distributed throughout the dough.

To put it together: butter the baking dish, add apple mixture and top it off with flour/oatmeal mix. Bake in the oven @ 375'F for 45 min to an hour till apples are soft and topping is browned.

  1. Apple crisp is a favorite at our house. I think they like it better than apple pie. I've got some tips on my site for making pie crust easier. Once you get the hang of it, it's not too hard. http://barbarabakes.blogspot.com/2008/03/pi-day-jennifers-favorite-fresh.html

  5. Apple crisp is one of my all time favorite desserts; I make it quite often and will order it in a restaurant over other "fancier" desserts. I could go for a big bowl of it right now!

  7. I just made apple crisp, but I was too tried to make the oh so tasty topping, so I simply layered the top with a few tablespoons of butter and sprinkled brown sugar, mini chocolate chips and cinnamon over the top! It was quite good - but not a match to how incredible this looks!
